The Berber Tent: A Symbol Of Tradition And Hospitality
The desert, or the sea of sand, is a place where, as soon as you gaze into it, you find yourself lost in its golden yellow color as if you are in a treasure chest. In reality, you are in a treasure chest of civilization, a civilization with its own unique name and identity: nomadism. The people of the desert have always been known for their nomadic lifestyle, moving from place to place and living a life of simplicity. It might sound enjoyable at first, but you need to know that living this life requires determination, patience, and a great deal of knowledge. Determination and patience to endure the hardships and fluctuating weather of the desert, and sufficient knowledge to understand the desert and make it serve you in all seasons.
The first obstacle faced by nomads in their ascetic lifestyle is housing. They need a mobile dwelling. We are not talking about traveling in the city, where there are hotels everywhere. We are talking about the desert, where there is only sand and a horizon that stretches to infinity. This is where the tent comes in, which is the subject of this article.
The desert has its own unique lifestyle, different from cities in terms of housing, customs, and traditions. Since ancient times, desert dwellers have invented their mobile homes from camel hair, wool, and goat hair to protect them from the heat in summer and the cold in winter. It is the tent that serves as a hospitality space during the day and a sleeping area at night. These tents, which faced extinction after the desert people moved to cities and those remaining relied on stone buildings, are now making a comeback. They are once again set up in luxurious homes of the wealthy, as shelters for tourists in the desert’s spring and autumn, or as festive spaces celebrating heritage and culture.
Today in Morocco, tents are set up in cities and villages as small hospitality centers. Even though Moroccan desert dwellers have settled in city apartments, it has not distanced them from their nomadic life or their longing to live inside a tent. In large villas in cities like Guelmim, Tan-Tan, Laayoune, and other Moroccan cities, you can find families setting up traditional tents, clearly indicating the dominance of their traditional roots over modernity and their nostalgia for the simple nomadic life.
Additionally, today you might find tents set up as venues for events, or some families might erect tents to welcome and honor guests. Thus, the tent has become a symbol of hospitality for the Moroccan people, or as we might call it, “a castle of hospitality without doors.”
